In 2009, Mountain BizWorks served nearly 1074 individual clients, of which;
61% were women, 65% were low-income individuals, and 26% were minorities.
Mountain BizWorks also helped to create 163 new businesses, which created 309 jobs, while also helping to sustain 1147 jobs.
In addition, over $750,000 was lent to local small businesses.
Small Businesses that employ fewer than 50 employees and entrepreneurship are critical drivers of the rural economy in North Carolina. These businesses represent nearly 95% of the over 98,000 businesses operating in rural North Carolina.
Small businesses generate the most business and job growth in rural areas. Establishments with fewer than 50 employees accounted for 99% of all new establishments created between 1998 and 2002. These same businesses generated more than $14.5 billion in wages and provided jobs for over 614,000 people in 2002.
